The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) earned a 2020 ASAE Power of A Summit Award for its Unifying Framework for the Early Childhood Education Profession, a vision for how to drive the significant and sustained public investment that will allow all children, birth through age 8, to benefit from high-quality early childhood education provided by well-prepared, diverse, supported, and compensated professionals. ASAE honored the program in the category of the Power of Industry/Professional Advancement.
Beginning in January 2017, NAEYC convened a broad-based Task Force of leaders from 15 national organizations that represent members of the early childhood education field serving children birth through age 8 across settings including, child care centers, family child care homes, schools, and preparation programs. Known as Power to the Profession, the Task Force and its partners led an effort to systematically and sequentially establish a Unifying Framework for the Early Childhood Education Profession and set a vision for driving public investment that to allow children through age 8 to benefit from high-quality early childhood education.
The Unifying Framework was developed through a three- year, profession-led, iterative, and sequential process. The process elevated the voices of early childhood educators, administrators, higher education faculty, trainers, stakeholders, partners, and advocates through surveys, focus groups, information sessions, webinars, and other engagement opportunities across states and early learning settings.
The Task Force addressed real challenges in the current system, as children were deemed not to be getting what they need. In many instances, families pay more for childcare than for housing, if and when they can access childcare. Similarly, the workforce is paid so little that nearly half of children live in families that depend on public assistance. At the same time, the research and science was clear to NAEYC: it was and is time for the United States to make significant and sustained investments in high quality early childhood education provided by well-prepared and well-compensated professionals who reflect the diversity of the children and families they serve.
ASAE’s Power of A (association) Awards, the industry’s highest honor, recognize the association community’s valuable contributions on the local, national and global levels. The Power of A Awards reward the outstanding accomplishments of associations and industry professionals who work tirelessly to solve problems, and strengthen lives, the workforce, the economy, and the world.
